There are few places left in the United States that can match the wilderness experience of this area. Fly-In plus Pack-In to fish an almost unused portion of the Central Idaho Wilderness. A native population of wild Cutthroat Trout inhabit the rivers and tributaries of this 3 million plus acres of roadless, wild country. These un-harassed cutthroats are readily caught on dry flys as well as nymphing.
We operate a base camp located 4 miles (11/2 hours by horseback) from a backcountry airstrip. The camp consists of dome sleeping tents with floors, cots, and foam pads. A large wall tent is used for dining and staffed with a full-time cook. One professional guide is supplied for each two anglers. Temperatures typically range from a low of 50 to a high of 90 degrees during the summer months.
The waters we fish are the North Fork and East Fork of Moose Creek, which by western standards is a small river. All fishing is from the banks and by wading, requiring some climbing over rocks. At times, roll casts and side casts are a must. Wild Cutthroats ranging from 8" to 15" are caught daily with some 16" to 18" fish caught each trip. Moose Creek is also full of Steelhead smolts that have not yet journeyed to the ocean.
Most days anglers ride out on horseback accompanied by a guide. Fishing days are long, leaving camp by 8am and returning between 7 and 8pm. At least two to four hours of that may be on horseback. Anglers must be able to do some walking and negotiate rocky bottom streams. The rewards, however, are catching native fish descended from the same strain of Cutthroats that Lewis and Clark encountered.
